mpfuchs
With all the talks in the media about the half male and half female cardinal, I was wondering about this bird. I've seen it multiple times around my feeder here in Virginia, but was finally able to take a picture today. Is it transforming from juvenile to adult? Or winter to summer coat transition? Pigeon
That’s pretty much a normal male Cardinal. Nice photo and welcome.
lonesome55dove
I don't live in Cardinal country anymore but it looks like a fairly normal male to me. ? **Pigeon beat me to it as I was typing. ? mpfuchs
Interesting. Most of them I see are totally red, without any of the brown patches. Or maybe I don't notice it as much as I try to take pictures from the front ? Either way, thanks for the clarification!

He's probably molting for the breeding season, that would cause the brown patches. ?
