Like House Finches, Flamingos, and many other species, the color of a Cardinal is based on the minerals in the food it eats.  While most House Finches are reddish, orange and yellow ones are not uncommon.  A yellow cardinal would certainly seem possible, but it's another thing to have one show up.

Last spring there was an article about a yellow cardinal at someone else's house in Alabama. Wonder if it's the same bird. . .
