They're very common.  They mimic the other birds they hear and then repeat those calls, and repeat them, and repeat them, and ...

One theory is they're trying to make birds of other species think the territory has already been claimed.  Each mockingbird's call will vary depending on where the bird lives and what other species it hears.  They're not just limited to imitating other birds; mocks in cities have been know to imitate urban sounds they hear.
