what kind of bird is this?

Recommended Posts

I saw this large bird (about duck size) this afternoon in a live oak tree in the city - central Texas.  The picture is not great but I am hoping that the legs and size of wings would be good clues.  There appears to be a white stripe under the eye.  It was biting off leaf branches and making noise due to its size. Thanks!

Maybe Yellow-crowned Night-heron, but the white on the wingtips doesn't fit (unless it's just the lighting/photo).

Thanks MM and John!!  It seems to have the characteristics of the heron family.  The biggest bird I have actually seen in my backyard is a cardinal, so this one shocked me.

This is a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron.  You can see the distinctive facial pattern.

Agree... definite Yellow Crowned Night Heron here.
