taken in december in san francisco, ca - the duck was on a fairly small pond with coots and mallards and seemed to be the only one of its species. is this a female ring-necked duck? thanks!

The white around the bill is normal in Ring-necked. Scaups never exhibit a white eye-ring so I will confirm Ring-necked.

If you look in the first photo, the ring on the bill is there, it is just very faint.

Oh I mistook what you said! I thought you were talking about the white at the base of the bill on the face. Yeah, the white around the bill is an iffy mark... some have it and some don't. 

Like Megan said, this one has a very subtle thin white band.
