The white wingbars are at the tips of the covert feathers. By this time of the year, when they're almost ready to start molting again, those feather tips have worn off, leaving nothing but gray behind.

Thanks psweet.  I knew it looked different than when I saw it earlier and that's why I was wondering if it was a mockingbird.  Very helpful!
