DC064
This grebe was photographed at Lake Hodges in So. Ca. during Feb 2018. The common grebes seen there are Western, Clark's, and Pied-bill. The red eye eliminates Pied-bill. It does not appear to be Western or Clark's either, unless there is a juvenile version of them that looks like the photo. Can anyone give a positive ID? akandula
My first impression is an Eared Grebe Juvenile. However, it is slightly less common than the other grebes that you mentioned. Wait for others to confirm.

DC064
Thanks for the ID's. I was reluctant to conclude eared grebe since I have been going to Lake Hodges for years and have never before seen one. We are in range for non-breeding eared grebes and it does fit the ID well.
