Lazzo 0 Posted May 16 (edited) Hi, I found this bird sadly deceased on my doorstep here in Brooklyn, close to shore, but near BK bridge and not any beach. I cannot place what type of bird this is. Can someone help? Edited May 16 by Lazzo Notify me for replys

Charlie Spencer 1,329 Posted May 16 Welcome. I'm with HamRHead, Virginia Rail. Rails are birds that hang out in marshy wetlands and spend most of their time in tall reeds. If there are any of those near the river or its tributaries, that's likely where it came from. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Virginia_Rail/overview 1

Lazzo 0 Posted May 16 Thank you so much, I would never have found this on my own, It’s amazing to find it here in New York City!
birdbrain22 238 Posted May 16 Rails are secretive birds of the swamps and marshes, which there are plenty in Brooklyn/Queens...I am sure it was heading to one of them. Sadly window strikes are very common during migration as birds see skyline reflections and try to fly right on through. Some birds just get temporarily stunned but most fair far worse. 1
