central Texas 78070 tiny brown bird

Recommended Posts

Thank you for your reply, Creeker.  I am not a birder.  I am a photographer of wildlife, nature, landscape, and automobile subjects.  I think my visual memory is exceptional.  I do not recall seeing a bird of this description.  I have never heard of a bird called a pee-wee.  A search of the web shows that both the eastern and western pee-wee species appear in Texas.  The head shape and the size of the bird along with the coloring convince me that you are correct in identifying this creature as a pee-wee.

The bird had an odd way of getting a drink.  It flew from the rail surrounding my swimming pool to a bare dead branch of a potted plant.  From there, it dunked its head into the pool for a drink on the wing and then it returned to the guard rail.  It repeated this sequence for a second time.    Here are a couple of additional pics of the bird.

It might be checking the area for predators.  Drinking on the wing is pretty common, although I don't have enough experience with either pewees or phoebes to say if only one of them practices it.
