ID Yellow Woodpecker-type Bird, Please

Recommended Posts

This bird has been at our suet. Seen in Maine, open fields, woods, and water. It acts like a Downy or Hairy woodpecker, is feisty and more yellow and black than white and black. I haven't found it anywhere on line or in books. It looks like a hairy or downy that got crossed with one of our Baltimore orioles. Very curious as to what it might be.

It is a Downy Woodpecker with very stained feathers.  Don't know how it could get that way.  I wonder if it took a bath in a nasty puddle.

We have had a lot of rain. Perhaps it's nest/home is in a wet tree? We have a lot of maple and locust. Thank you very much, Bird Nuts
