Metaquatic
Central Mississippi farm pond. It was good Duck habitat with Mallards and Black Bellied Whistlers around. This one was off by itself on a little mud island.
geoffclarke
I think Common Merganser, which is a type of duck.
Metaquatic
I was thinking the same but the double wing bars through me off. Maybe a juvenile?

Metaquatic
At a distance it's hard to tell. I would think my bird was bigger than a Hooded Merganser. But there was nothing to compare it to. It flew with constant shallow beats.
birdbrain22
Agree with Hooded Merganser.. either female or 2nd year male.
Metaquatic
eBird says Hooded is typical and Common Merganser is Rare. I will post the pics with Hooded and see what my local moderator has to say about it. Thanks

Skull Guy
Agreed - your Moderator is wrong. The bill is too short for red-breasted (or common), there is no coloration difference between the head and neck (like in red-breasted) and the overall shape of the bird makes this a hooded merganser.
