flightman
I took these photos this morning at Oceanside NY. Another birder identified it by sound as an Alder Flycatcher. It does seem to match the photos on allaboutbirds.org. Correct species?
Winter
Flycatchers are so tough. I’d say either Least, Willow or, like you say, Alder flycatcher. But they’re nearly identical so hard to tell. Did you hear it make any calls/song? Sometimes that can help separate the two... Really nice shots by the way! flightman
Thanks Winter, A birder next to me said he recognized the song as an Alder. I was in the same place this morning, talking to three women who were birding. I mentioned the sighting to them and one played the call of an Alder using a smartphone app. There was an immediate answer from the trees. The Bird Nuts
Looks good for a Willow/Alder. The medium primary projection, thin eyering, and larger bill rules out Least. If it sounded like an Alder then it was an Alder. Edited June 8, 2019 by The Bird Nuts
