BIRDING Category Topics

Recommended Posts

I'd like to hear from the group as to which of these topics in BIRDING are important and which can be left out. I guess I could start a poll for this. You can judge the popularity of the topic by how many posts there are. There are a total of 8 Category groups, so I will pin each of these up shortly so you can see them all. Once we have decided on what to keep and what to toss, I will unpin them so they can stop taking up valuable space.

I agree, we should have "Help Me Identify a European or Other World Bird", but I would suggest "Help Me Identify a Bird" be changed to "Help Me Identify a North American Bird" so people are more likely to notice what that subforum is for.

Also, I would like a "Bird Feeders, Food, and Houses" subforum instead of "Backyard Birds, Feeders, Food".

"Help me identify an North American bird"

"Help me identify an bird outside North America"

"Photo sharing and discussion"

And roll the last 6 subforums into one "General Birding Topics"

I like this suggested organization from Charlie the most.

Suggest we rename the BIRDING Category to BIRD IDENTIFICATION. It would contain: 1 Help Me Identify North American Birds, 2 Help Me Identify Birds Outside North America, 3 Photo Sharing and Discussion.

The remaining forums would go in their own Category called GENERAL BIRDING TOPICS and contain: 1 General Off Topic, 2 Birds and Birding, Birding Trips, Bird Feeders, Food, and Houses (instead of "Backyard Birds, Feeders, Food"), 3 Birding Books CDs, 4 Courses and Cool Products, 5 Articles on Birding and 6 Comments on Specific Birds.

Everyone agree?

To me it doesn't make sense to have "photo sharing and discussion" under "Bird Identification"?  Maybe make a separate category for photo sharing?

I agree with akiley.  Why not keep everything under "BIRDING" (maybe except for General Off Topic)?

How about:

1. Birds and Birding and Birding Trips be combined (as you suggested - but don't know what it should be called)

2. Bird Feeders, Food, and Houses be a separate subforum

3. Birding Books, CDs, Courses, and Cool Products remains one subforum

Just to clarify, are you saying that the Bird Identification forums should be under what you have as #1?

And where would you suggest having Photo Sharing?

Often photo sharing is done to show people what the photographer saw, or just to show off a great shot.  I don't know how many people share photos for identification purposes.

Just to clarify, I didn't intend there to be any subforums under 'General Birding Topics' when I suggested it.  Look at the numbers on some of those older subforums.  Many of them have less than 10,000 posts.  Do those numbers justify individual subs?  Your call.

I'm just a leech around here; how it's structured going forward isn't as important to me as having it back!

There was a "sticky" somewhere on what do do if you found a sick or injured bird.  I think it would be helpful to the community if this were to be restored or recreated.

I wrote that (with help editing) and I still have it in a word document, so if Mitch wants to post it again I'd be happy to share it.

No, I think all of the subforums I mentioned plus the ID help and photo sharing subforums should be under the BIRDING category (like they used to be).  Sorry for the confusion.

Oh okay. That makes sense.  No problem.

Yes, please do include it back!  It's good to know where to find the information in case you find a sick / injured bird!

I think this structure is clear and easy to follow. My only suggestion would be to include the name of the countries which are included in North American bird in parenthesis, just to be extra clear!

What happened to Backyard Birds, Feeders, etc.?   I had some information to share with my group about my bluebirds and I do not see where any of our discussions went? Where do we create new threads in this category?

I'm the same way!

Mr./ Ms. Administrator....  If you are trying to decide which forum categories to keep versus which ones to toss, can't you just look at the number and frequency of posts from the past?  There are 6 categories that have over 10k posts from your screen shot at the top.

  1. Help me Identify a Bird
  2. Photo Sharing
  3. General / Off Topic Discussion
  4. Birds and Birding
  5. Birding Trips
  6. Backyard Birds, Feeders, Food

All of these categories have over 10k posts.  The next highest in 6k with some categories being under 1k or less.   Seems to me you would start with these 6 categories that I have listed and adjust from there....

Thanks for setting this up.
