Good afternoon, I live an hour out of Philadelphia (West) and saw the most amazing 🐦 in our yard yesterday. Its beak could be described as being neon red. It was out of a Crayola box. Outerwise it was just an ordinary black 🐦. I sat and looked at it for several minutes because of the striking color of the beak. I have found any explanation in my search of the world of the internet. It was hanging out in our bamboo. I will try and get a picture of it. I was going to cut the bamboo down but not now. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for getting back to me. I just looked it up and that's not it. It was just the beak that was red with a black head and body. When I say the beak was neon, I'm not exaggerating. We are surrounded by a lot of land and I have seen my fair amount of 🐦 s but never noticed this one before. Thanks for your time.

Any chance it was a red billed chough. Seems like the correct climate just wrong area. The bill did not hook as much but pretty near what I saw. Can you tell I am perseverating a little. Not luck me I swear (haha).

Probably a long shot but... Could the bill be stained due to the bird eating red berries or some kind of red fruit?  How about a European Starling with a stained bill?  🙂

Are you talking about Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the USA,  @johnwest, or are you in another part of the world? South Africa maybe? I ask because your suggested IDs aren't North American birds, and this is a North America ID forum. Some people can still help with the ID, but it'll be a lot more accurate if they know where the bird was spotted.

Good Morning Class, here's today's geography/history lesson, lol! 🙂

Twelve US states have a city/town called Philadelphia as do these countries... Brazil, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Turkey, Paraguay, Namibia, Liberia, Jordan, Jamaica, Germany, and Costa Rica. Who knew??

When @johnwest said Philadelphia (West), I am pretty sure he was talking about the town of Philadelphia in the City of Cape Town in Western Cape of South Africa, like @lonestranger said.

Good heavens, that never occurred to me.

Red-billed Wood Hoopoe, alias Green Wood Hoopoe?

That's understandable.  I'd probably resent being a PA native too.  :classic_tongue:

If in South Africa... I'd suggest Green Woodhoopoe. The appear black mostly but they have a green iridescence.

Not to worry. Every country has a city people make fun of. In Russia, for instance, they have one they make fun of.

It’s Philadelphia. Just kiddin’ ya, friend. But, there was that old story going around about the headstone W C Fields requested when he died. It supposedly read, “On second thought, I’d rather be in Philadelphia”. 🍸Cheers.
