I live in SE Pennsylvania, in a small town 26 miles NW of Philadelphia. Farms, woodlands, streams, and reservoirs are all around, and the Schuylkill River is a quarter mile from my home.

This bird sings from a large tree too distant to identify even with binoculars. I have only this recording for a possible ID.

Can anyone make an ID using just its song?

Can someone explain why it is not a Northern Cardinal? I always get the two mixed up.

That three-note song is very typical of Carolina Wrens and not of cardinals.  And the quality is different (cardinal whistles are more human-like).

Thank you for the quick replies. Seems Carolina Wren is correct to my ear, with an adjustment for small regional differences in local accents.
