DC064
Two more birds I cannot ID. They were both shot in the highlands of Costa Rica in April. I have searched my field guides and cannot find matches.
DC064
More info. The first is small, the size of a wren or sparrow. The second is larger, the size of a robin or a jay. Edited July 31, 2018 by DC064
psweet
The first bird is a Black-billed Nightingale Thrush. The second one appears to be a Sooty Thrush. My Costa Rica guide shows them as all-black, but everything else fits, and I wouldn't be surprised if youngsters were brown like this.
DC064
Thanks for the ID's. I should have picked up the Nightingale Thrush. My guide (Garrigues and Dean) has it and the illustration is a pretty good match. The Sooty Thrush is another matter since the color does not match. Otherwise it is a good match and the orange beak, orange eye ring, orange legs and pale iris is pretty definitive. I believe you are right that it is probably a juvenile.
