Having trouble identifying this guy

Recommended Posts

I shot this guy at the lake in Meredosia , Illinois that is part of a wildlife refuge. Its giving me problems because it looks like several species but certain features don't match. The beak is to curved to be a Willow flycatcher and the tail doesn't seem to match the Northern Mockingbird and I have yet to see a bird that has that defined line of color on its head . If someone could help me out that would be great . I wish I could have gotten a better shot from the side but it stayed in this position for quite a while only turning its head slowly.

Juvenile Yellow-billed Cuckoo. They take a little while to develop the color on the bill, but the white throat (vs. buff in Black-billed) and the extensive white tips to the rectrices fit Yellow-billed. Also, that would be the very southern edge of Black-billed breeding range, whereas Yellow-billed are quite common.
