Spizella Sparrow ID poor photo

Recommended Posts

Welcome to Whatbird!

I would agree with a Clay-colored Sparrow. Note the small bill, slender body, fairly long, notched tail, pale, buffy and gray overall, gray collar, and contrasting face pattern. Brewer's Sparrows would have a less contrasty, "washed-out" gray face and body and usually a streaky nape.

Nice bird! Even though Brewer's Sparrows are more common in Madera, Clay-colored have been reported nearby.

Our local reviewer disagrees with the ID and believes it is a Brewer’s Sparrow.  I’m removing it from my eBird list to avoid controversy.  I posted it as CCSP because iBird Photo Recognizer gave it 98% chance of being CCSP.
