American oystercatcher?

But this one didn't seem to have any white. Saw it in Monterey, CA during the day.

Agreed. American Oystercatchers have a white (not black-brown) belly. While American Oystercatchers live on the east coast, coasts of Mexico, and the coasts of Baja California in North America, Black Oystercatchers only live on the west coast of North America and Baja California. American Oystercatchers are considered vagrants to Monterey Bay - Black Oystercatchers are the much more common oystercatcher that lives there.
