cccougar
Seeking confirmation- is this a Red-tailed Hawk, possibly a juvenile one? Spotted this beauty today in Charleston, S.C. When it flew away I didn’t see red feather tails. It let people get pretty close while perched on a low branch next to a downtown hotel. Thank you for the help!
akandula
Cool pictures! Yes, this is a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk. Note the broad, brown belly band, white-streaked brown head, pale chest, pale eyes, and brown barred tail. Adults are similar but usually have reddish streaks on the chest (but it is still very pale), darker markings on the head, dark eyes, and a red tail. Charlie Spencer
Great shots! Don't you love it when you luck into a cooperative bird?
cccougar
Yes Charlie because it happens so rarely, right? Any way to tell whether this juvy is a boy or girl?
The Bird Nuts
I agree with young Red-tailed. As far as I know the only way to tell male from female is by size, and that can be difficult to gauge, especially when they're alone.
