xpoetmarcr
This is from last week in SW Idaho. Sorry for the poor quality photo. Thanks.

The Bird Nuts
It helps a lot to lighten photos like this. Do you have a photo editing program?
xpoetmarcr
I cropped it a bit more and upped the exposure adjustment. It does lose some detail when uploading, so I hope this helps. Note: The head is a brownish color on my monitor. Edited August 3, 2018 by xpoetmarcr
The Bird Nuts
I was just suggesting lightening photos if you are having trouble identifying a bird. I could already see the bird well enough. ?

Any free / cheap suggestions, preferably ones that don't require .RAW files and don't involve uploading the photo to the application's web site? (And are easy for the inexperienced to figure out without a three-credit-hour course and a weekly one hour lab?)

I mainly use: Microsoft Digital Image Suite Anniversary Edition (very old, but very easy to use), but it looks like it's only available on eBay now (I wouldn't download it!). And RawTherapee, a free open-source program which can edit RAW and non-RAW photos. I think GIMP is similar, but I haven't used that much.

Another free program I haven't used much is Paint.NET which, I am told, is easy to use (probably much easier to use than RawTherapee).

I've installed GIMP for users at work but it looks like overkill for my rudimentary skills. I'll install Paint.NET and see what it does. Of course, it would help immensely if I knew what I was aiming for. I think figuring out where I'm going is the bigger problem, more than choosing a tool to get there. Thanks! I downloaded GIMP a while back and found it rather confusing to use. RawTherapee was something I was planning on trying sometime.
Jerry Friedman
I'm happy with GIMP. I have trouble with the brushes, but for wildlife photos (cropping, rotating, lightening and darkening, getting rid of violet fringes, sharpening) I find it pretty straightforward.
