please id this bird

Recommended Posts

it's black, with a red cap and a white spot on its tail, about the size of a woodpecker, maybe a bit smaller, and I can't find anything that remotely looks like it. It was on the ground feeding and when I came outside it took off so no pics.

Welcome to Whatbird!

Can you tell us the state or territory where you saw the bird?  Did you see it recently, or before this week?

Unfortunately, woodpeckers can range from 5 to 16 inches in size.  However, the colors you describe are a good fit for your bird actually being a woodpecker.  Many woodpeckers feed on the ground to eat insects.  You might look at these and see if there's a match:

https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/browse/taxonomy/Picidae

If none of those match, can you compare the bird to another bird that isn't as variable in size, like a sparrow, robin, or crow?

Thanks!
