Hairy/Downy Woodpecker - Saskatchewan

Recommended Posts

I usually don't have too much problem eyeballing the size differences between Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers, but this one left me less than 100% sure. I ended up concluding it was a small female Hairy, because of the combination of plumage marks, the bill that would probably be too big for a female Downy (and it's not a male), and the call, which was a pretty loud "tweek". But I wanted to see if others agree with that or not.

Thanks!

Thanks. I've definitely seen Downys with much smaller-looking bills than this back home in Oregon. I wonder if that varies regionally? Sibley also says this nape pattern usually goes with Hairy, but then "usually" does mean "not always".

Downy and Hairy Woodpecker each have a number of subspecies, but I've never heard of bill size being a differentiator. I'd say probably individual variation.
