Welcome to Whatbird!

Yep, this is a male Common Yellowthroat. You can identify males by their black mask and yellow on their throat and under their tail. Females, on the other hand, don’t have a black mask and just have a plain brown head.

Thanks so much. This bird had a much larger mask than usual. I apologise for the lack of a written description as I couldn't figure out what to click on. Can you help? Thanks again

Welcome!  You can type in the same box where you pasted the photo.  You can enter the date, location, activity, and other relevant info.

Why is the crown black? I've never seen that before. Usually they have a silver line above the eye, with brown or yellow above.

I think it’s just a shadow. The crown, as you were saying, is normally brown, but because of the shadow, it looks black.

The entire head is in shadow, not just the crown.  The only part of the bird in sunlight is its left shoulder and upper chest.

Huh. I see the shoulder and upper chest being the only parts not in shadow at all, but it still looks like the whole head is black. I believe you though. Funny the tricks our eyes can play on us sometimes.
