Female house finch? Or not

Recommended Posts

Saw it in my backyard in the Bay Area, CA around 11 am today. It is similar to female house finch, but... it looked more white, and I haven't seen house finches feeding on the ground, while this bird did.

Yes, these are female/immature male House Finches - note the brown overall, coarse, blurry streaking on the belly, and conical bill with a strong curved culmen.

I've seen House Finches feeding on the ground.

I routinely have House Finches on the ground around my feeders, scarfing up stray sunflower seeds like this one is.  In the winter, they're joined on the ground by other seed-eaters more typically seen at feeders - American Goldfinches, and Purple Finches in those years they get this far south.
