Allen1tx
Observed on October 16th in Edmond Oklahoma. Thinking clay-colored but not sure. Thanks in advance.
akandula
This is actually a Chipping Sparrow. The black eyeline that goes through the eye all the way to the bill is a diagnostic ID feature (a Clay-colored’s eyeline stops at the eye and doesn’t go to the bill).
Allen1tx
Thanks. Initially thought chipping but talked myself out of it.

Tony Leukering
And note that the first part of the English name of Spizella pallida is a compound adjective, thus is hyphenated, with the letter immediately following the hyphen being in lower case. In case like "Great Black-backed Gull," both "Great" and "Black-backed" are modifying "Gull" independently, whereas, "Black" and "backed" are not.
