Downy Woodpecker?

Recommended Posts

Yes, this is definitely a Ladder-backed Woodpecker. There is no other species of woodpecker in North America that has black-and-white stripes that go all the way up the back.

Downy Woodpeckers would have a black back with a vertical white stripe (not a "ladder-back") and lack markings on the breast/belly (at least not melanistic ones).
