Recommended Posts

This bird was perched high at the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge in MD yesterday.  I would love some help with the ID,  Thanks in advance!

This is an adult Cooper's Hawk. Note the bluish-gray upperparts with a contrasting black cap and red eye, dense reddish barring on the underparts, and small, hooked bill.

The similar Sharp-shinned Hawk would have a hooded (dark nape) appearance, instead of a capped (pale nape) appearance.

For some reason an adult Cooper never even entered my mind.  But now that you point it out it seems obvious.  Thanks for the help!
