NE Florida female wigeon (and ruddy)

Recommended Posts

A bunch of local birders have been reporting a female American wigeon at a local pond so today I went to look for myself. Found the pond with a fair bit of activity, mostly rind-necked ducks. But I believe these shots are the wigeon in question, just looking for confirmation. And the last picture is a ruddy duck I believe.

American Wigeon, Ruddy Duck and Ring-necked Duck to it's left.

Why isn't the bird on the right in the last photo a female Ring-necked?  Is it the barred flanks?

The bird on the right in the last photo is definitely a female Ruddy Duck and not a female Ring-necked Duck due to the long stuck-up tail, lack of pale eyering, dark line across the pale cheek, and barred flanks along with the small size and head shape.

Thanks, akandula.  I can see now that the light spot on the face is not an eyering.  I also thought a Ruddy would be much smaller than a Ring-necked, but I guess not!

In one of the other photos I took the ruddy does look quite a bit smaller than the ring-necks surrounding it, but this photo didn't show the stiff brushy tail as well.

I think the male Ring-necked is facing partially away in the original photo, making it look smaller in size compared to the Ruddy.
