Dowitcher Question

Recommended Posts

Location? Date?

Beyond that, I’m not an expert, but looking at pictures I’ve seen, I’m leaning Short-billed.

November in California; both dowitchers are possible here. Trying to get to a point where I am confident telling them apart, but its tough.

Just wondering, what makes you say Short-billed?

All first-winter Long-billed. Note the retailed juvenile scapulars (reddish feathers on the back) and completely plain tertials (no inner markings).

Didn't realize the last 4 photos were a different bird. The first two photos are Long-billed for the reasons I said above but I'm unsure about the other bird. The tertials aren't completely plain and I it's not super close to full basic plumage (Long-billed molts first).
