Wake Atoll Common or Wilson Snipe?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Looking for some outside opinions from others who are familiar with Common Snipes. I recently returned from Wake Atoll in the Western Pacific where I saw a snipe sp. on Oct 31 (see attached pics). It never flew or stretched revealing underwings or tail barring. My impression was that the buffy edges were broader on the dorsal feathers than on the Wilson's snipe. Would appreciate other perspectives.CommonSnipeWakeIsland_2019-10-31_0002.thumb.JPG.5d3b79b4d41136e26eda9de67c989447.JPGCommonSnipeWakeIsland_2019-10-31_0003.thumb.JPG.72017491a885cfd52b092d2b52a6361f.JPGCommonSnipeWakeIsland_2019-10-31_0004.thumb.JPG.2fac219c4dc9784ba0e9f7c573848761.JPGCommonSnipeWakeIsland_2019-10-31_0001.thumb.JPG.94efa26394d5683f7e406f105973a151.JPGCommonSnipeWakeIsland_2019-10-31_0004.thumb.JPG.2fac219c4dc9784ba0e9f7c573848761.JPGCommonSnipeWakeIsland_2019-10-31_0003.thumb.JPG.72017491a885cfd52b092d2b52a6361f.JPGCommonSnipeWakeIsland_2019-10-31_0002.thumb.JPG.5d3b79b4d41136e26eda9de67c989447.JPGCommonSnipeWakeIsland_2019-10-31_0004.thumb.JPG.2fac219c4dc9784ba0e9f7c573848761.JPGCommonSnipeWakeIsland_2019-10-31_0001.thumb.JPG.94efa26394d5683f7e406f105973a151.JPG

I would agree with a Common Snipe, due to the very buffy breast/upper flanks, broad buffy lines across the back, and plenty of rufous internal markings on the tertials.
