American Black Ducks ?

Recommended Posts

The following images borrowed ( with permission ) from a fellow birder.  Both from West Tennessee.  The first from Sept. of this year, the second from a few days past.  The conundrum :  Am. Black Duck vs hybrid vs Mallard eclipse plumage.  Female Am. Black Duck in second image ?  All thoughts welcome.  Thanks in advance for the assist.

The first bird is not a American Black Duck, possibly a Mallard x Black Duck hybrid - the white in the tail suggests Mallard, body not dark enough and too warm in color for Black Duck. However there appears to be no white in the speculum, suggesting American Black Duck over Mallard. Seems like mixed characteristics to me, suggesting hybridization.

Not sure about the second bird, won't hazard a guess.

Second one looks more like a female Gadwall based on head and bill shape plus the lack of white on the face.
