I plastered some suet on the side of the tree during this week's storm, Brown Creepers will got at it on trees, but not on feeders. The juncos would sit underneath it as woodpeckers, Blue Jays and White-breasted Nuthatches knocked off small pieces.
Birding Boy
First documented record of White-winged Crossbill in my county in almost 8 years! (Well, me and another birder had one last year, but heard only) Kinda crazy, me and the birder I was with this morning stopped to look for a Harrier, and started talking about crossbills as we walked towards some spruce trees, as we were doing this a they flew in and less than a minute later they were gone again. https://ebird.org/checklist/S102061218

Connor Cochrane
@IKLlandYou're not the only one who got a rare bird in their yard this week. Today I got the one Black Vulture that lives in California flying over my house. I don't think it's even been seen in this part of the county in almost a year and a half.
DLecy
Again, I'm late getting this bird, but I did get the Oriental Turtle-Dove this morning. Quite the Siberian celebrity. There were maybe 100+ birders there. I haven't seen a crowd like that since the Common Cuckoo in Watsonville, CA in 2012. It was bonkers. https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/413638681

Aaron
I don’t know… A crowd of 100+ people looking for the same bird would take the joy out of birding and seeing the bird for me. How do you even choreograph who gets to take photos and so on? Or is it just a free for all? Last year when the boreal owl came to my city, there was maybe 60-80 people looking for it and that was a bit too chaotic for me. Luckily (for the owl) it was not seen again, but based on the crowd around the NSWO I’m not sure how anyone would have had time to ‘enjoy’ the birds presence or take in the moment.

I took a photo of the scene, but it was a few minutes after the bird had flown, so the crown was only about 1/4 of what it originally was. 7 hours ago, Aaron said: I don’t know… A crowd of 100+ people looking for the same bird would take the joy out of birding and seeing the bird for me. Definitely not my favorite kind of “birding,” but sometimes that’s the price one has to pay to see an extremely rare bird. Overall, it wasn’t too chaotic since the dove was prmairyly in trees in various private backyards. Everyone was courteous and enjoyed the bird from a safe distance. I have seen much worse behavior numerous times before at much less rare birds, so it wasn’t too bad. But yes, this was more about a tick on a list than sitting and truly enjoying and studying a bird.

Bullock’s Oriole aren’t flagged here in the winter, however they’re uncommon. I’ve had a few this year. Maybe that’s just SoCal.

I’ve seen a couple in Tennessee, and plenty in VT, but they are rare in both states. Though, they are much more common in the winter.

I have all 4 of 4 county records on eBird (second most populous county in the state, birder wise)
