Finally managed to get photos of a Calliope Hummingbird from my patch. They're quite rare in the county, and my patch is definitely the best place to look for them. They're very hard to photograph though. I only saw 24 there before I managed to get a photo of one!

Not sure how rare these are including their Caribbean range, but their range in the US is a tiny sliver of south Florida.  I did know what they were when I spotted them.  My best bird by far from spring break on Marco Island.

  • 2 weeks later...

My "Rarities" from yesterday at Tawas Pt. State Park in east-central Michigan.

So hyped about this one. Adult Little Gull!! A very uncommon migrant through the great lakes and one I've wanted to see in adult plumage (And closer than a 250 feet away) for a while.

Rare this far east and north, a migrant Yellow-headed Blackbird

VERY rare past southern Michigan, had some pretty good views of a continuing Cerulean Warbler!

3rd report for the state so far this year, and another very rare bird so far north, a migrant Dickcissel

And whatever this bunting thing is...

Rad. Congrats! These two in particular!!! That underwing might be one of the most beautiful things in the entire avian kingdom!

Is that the bird that was thought initially to be a Lazuli?

Yes. Someone had told me originally that they thought it looked fine for a Lazuli, but thankfully some people here and someone from the MRBRC chimed in with other options.

At some point I will check, but I'm not sure I've had this many super-rare birds in one day in the county.  These are the first Spring records in the county for White-rumped Sandpiper, Franklin's Gull and Black-bellied Plover.  All the best looks I've had at each of these species.  Also a late tagged Horned Grebe.

A Scissor-tailed Flycatcher showed up at the Portland International Airport last week.

Awesome!!

I'd forgotten just how exciting these fellas are to the birders that don't live in the southern Great Plains. I was birding in Oklahoma with a friend from Tennessee a few days ago and he was super excited at getting his lifer Scissor-tailed Flycatcher! He and his dad were bonkers for those things.

We should never take our birds for granted, even if all we think we have is Starlings and House Sparrows.
