Solitary Sandpiper or Lesser Yellowlegs?

Recommended Posts

Going over last year's checklists and this photo is from November in Jamaica Bay, Queens, NYC. Merlin Bird ID pegged it as a Solitary first and Yellow-legs second, saying that both were rare sightings for that time of year. Thanks for your input, forum!

However, why not Greater Yellowlegs, which is commoner late in fall than is Lesser and sports a somewhat contrastingly pale bill base, as the photo seems to show?

I often fall into the trap of limiting myself to the species suggested by an original poster.  I'm trying to do better this year of looking beyond the listed options; gods know I've often suggested the wrong birds myself.
