Bluebird Nesting 2020

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

Today is the big day!  21 days in the nest and the parent bluebirds have stopped taking insects into the nest box.  They are sitting outside on nearby trees calling for the babies to come out.  Too bad it is raining.  It will be a rude awakening for the babies coming out of the box and getting wet on their first day out!  :classic_sad:

Wow, 21 days?  Mine typically fledge at day 17.  This last brood waited to day 18.  We are up to 4 eggs in the second nest, so well on our way to more babies!

It could have been 20 days but I was assuming incubation started on April 1st.  In truth, she could have started incubating them later than that.  I didn't see them calling this morning so I am assuming they are out of the box now.

The first bird you are talking about sounds a little like a Painted Bunting but I don't think you have them in West Va. The blue birds you are talking about are either Blue Grosbeaks or Indigo Buntings.  The Buntings are smaller than the Grosbeaks.  You can look them up on Google to decide.

Yes I did look them up once I seen them here they say they are the indiago buntings .  There is also another from that family that’s a rainbow color that I have never seen here  before .  But it sure is beautiful I wish they were here all the time I am almost 61 and never seen this bird except on tv .  But I really enjoyed it though wish it would of stayed around long enough to get a pic  but wasn’t that lucky . But thank you for the info I appreciate it .

Here in South Central Oklahoma my first batch of Bluebirds left the box about 10 days ago, and a pair has nested in a second box and already feeding insects.  It sounds like you are describing a male Painted Bunting.  Fortunately I have two of them that are frequenting my seed feeder and they really are beautiful.  My granddaughter calls them "rainbow birds".  Here is a picture I took of one in the front yard this week.

I put a mini bluebird trail in my backyard that runs along a biking/walking trail behind our property.  I put the first house up three years ago and finished with a third bluebird house last year. This year was the first time the bluebirds FINALLY took to one of the boxes.  The young ones fledged on May 15.  Here is a picture of the proud papa getting meal worms for his little ones.  In addition this particular feeder has been the most effective feeder for the Eastern Bluebirds.  I took an old wire suet feeder and lined the inside of the walls so the larger birds could not force their way in from the side of the roof.  It took the Eastern Bluebirds sometime to actually try to use the feeder but they eventually came around to use it this winter.  It has saved me much money in meal worms because the Starlings, Blue Jays and House Sparrows would devour them before the Bluebirds could get to them.

Yes that’s exactly what bird I saw here for first time ever well I hope he comes back. Again I love the rain bow colors .

i have same problem here with the feeders for my bluebirds with mealworms before they get to them the blue jays  black birds. The tens   Want stop until it’s all gone same way with my  golden finch food feeders  I use to buy nothing but the  finch food for them  in the socks until the blue jays would peck holes in them  and eat it or the ground squirrels would do it lol. I try to feed them all  blue not fond on the blue jays right now .

but will have to figure out a way to keep them from  getting into bluebirds feeders .but I love all the birds  especially my bluebirds , my Hummers, finches, blue buntings and the rainbow colored one and my orange and black I know the name just can’t think of it right now .

But thsnk you for your info I appreciate it bunches  love learning the diff species of birds .

My second clutch is about 5 days old. Parents are feeding rigorously.  Some bad news at my mom’s house. A rat snake made his way into the nest box last weekend and swallowed all babies.  My mom killed him when he exited the bluebird box but he had already done the deed.  The bluebirds are already acting like they may start another brood.  This fall I will improve the nest box to make it snake proof.  This is the first time in 15 years that a snake got into the box.  It is mounted on a privacy fence so that is susceptible to snakes. The bluebirds are fierce but they cannot deter a rat snake.
