Sure No One’s Tired of This—Immature Cooper’s or Sharpie?

Recommended Posts

Just when I thought I had this down! Appears to have the blocky head of the Cooper’s but chest markings and squarish tail seem more like Sharp-Shinned. Seen today (2/4/2020) in East Texas (Tyler).

Definitely young Cooper's. Note the thin streaking, tubular overall, relatively large, blocky head, small eyes close to the front of the head, and shorter outer-tail feathers.

"Squareness" and "roundness" of the tail are misleading; instead look at the relative length of the outer tail feathers. On Cooper's, they're noticeably smaller than the inner feathers, while on Sharp-shinned, all the feathers are about the same length.

Personally, I'm never tired of this question.  I need the practice.  It must be helping; I got this one.

Scaup and Canada / Cackling, on the other hand ... :classic_dry:

I agree with everything @akandula wrote...although I've never heard of the word "overall" used as a noun like that. 🙂

More explaining = more grammar mistakes :classic_rolleyes:

Tubular overalls are what New Wave farmers wear.
