Hi All!

February 7, 2020 - Santa Rosa Beach Florida

Is this a black bellied plover… Very strong eyebrow. is this a black bellied plover… Very strong eyebrow.

 

Also, still working on the lesser versus greater scalp. How accurate is the green versus purple head on males…?  Any help would be great thanks!

Lesser Scaup can show both green and purple iridescence. Greater Scaups can only show green and never show purple.

Thus, do not make IDs just based on the fact that a scaup has a green head.

Yeah I know, I was just using the head sheen as an additional feature to support the ID. Some of the birds show the broad bill with an extensive dark black nail and appropriate crown shape of Greater.

Never use head sheen color. Ever. I always stress this. Your scaup are:

1st scaup pic: Lesser 2nd from left. Others are Greater

2nd- Both Lesser

3rd: Greater
