Lifers

Recommended Posts

Got 2.5 lifers this morning!

The half lifer is OCWA, which I saw three of. I have only heard one before, so it was nice to finally see them after hours of unsuccessful searches! https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/382038921

Orange-crowned Warbler

Second lifer was Loggerhead Shrike! This one was at a known spot, so it was easy to get, and I just haven't gotten around to going to see it yet. https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/382037111

Loggerhead Shrike

Third lifer was completely out of the blue. Nowhere close to being on my radar. Henslow's Sparrow! Didn't get photos, but saw enough of the bird (why are they so shy) to get an ID thankfully. Heard it call once.

We chased this species a couple of times on trips to Miami-Dade County earlier this year without success. I kept seeing them being reported in Palm Beach County which is a bit closer for us than Miami but still far enough that we would make it an overnighter.  The hard part was convincing my husband to go. He said no more trips to Miami-Dade or Monroe Counties until next year (the driving in Miami...can be pretty annoying). But this hot spot was not in either of those Counties. So off we went. We were about to give up looking when I ask one of the park personnel if he new where it was being seen. He told us and in short order we found it. Spot-breasted Oriole.

Burrowing Owl! Showed up just south of Seattle, very rare west of the Cascades. Makes it a two owl weekend?

It's too cold up there! Tell the owl it's warmer down in Portland!

Murphy's Law strikes again! We just returned from a trip to southern Florida where this was our target bird and the day after we return home a Gray-tailed Tattler shows up in Monroe County further south. Had we known we could have extended our stay in south Florida. ? It is an over 6 hour drive from where we live in North Florida and we have responsibilities for the next several days that keep us close to home. Maybe it will stay for a while. It is a first Florida record and is way way way far away from it's normal territory. It would be fun to chase.

Hermit Thrush in my yard! Seems like they're later migrants here. I was literally just practicing violin when I saw a thrush land in a bush right outside the window. Rushed to get the binoculars and saw the reddish tail and constant wing flicking. They are supposed to breed in parts of New York, but I think this one was definitely because of the migration.
