Got any good ducks over there? I really need to boost my waterfowl- only three species of ducks and one species of goose on the life list.

I don't know, I've never really been actually birding in the winter before. I do have a few more ducks than you do though so maybe.

Yeah, probably. For now a trip to Collins Lake, the best place in my county for ducks, might help my life list a bit. I haven't seen a Common Merganser before and those have been pretty reliably reported from there on eBird, so hoping for that.

What ducks are on your life list? I only have American Black, Wood, and of course Mallard.

Mallard, American Black Duck, Northern Pintail, Long-tailed Duck, Black Scoter, Hooded Merganser, Gadwall, Green-winged Teal, and American Wigeon. I admit Plum Island has some pretty good ducks.

Ahhh, nice. I must say ABDU is pretty hard to find inland, so it was a lucky find for me. There are a ton of ducks I should be seeing in the area,  but I haven't gone to the right places for them.

So, I kind of got a Rough-legged Hawk earlier this year in Georgia, but it was far away and the quickest of glances. Other birders present that saw it verified what it was, but I never felt very fulfilled. Today in New Mexico, I finally got a REAL look at one, so now it feels like I have gotten it for my life list.

Rough-legged Hawk

I miss these! My favorite hawk when I lived in Colorado. I enjoyed winter birding in Colorado. It was the best time for hawks in Colorado. Another I miss is the Ferruginous Hawk. Sibley's shows the Ferruginous as year round in Colorado but there were more in the winter.

Ferruginous would also be a lifer, so I'm keeping my eyes peeled. Going to drive the kids up into Colorado just to see it on Sunday.

Harris’s Sparrow. Lots of White-throated Sparrows at this location too but apparently I was the only person today who didn’t see one! I could have had an ABA Zonotrichia slam!  Ah well, we all need nemesis birds to keep us birding. I also saw a Swamp Sparrow for the first time—beautiful long looks, out in the open, but as soon as I looked through my camera viewfinder it was gone. I was very, very angry.

Not yet, but soon…

LOL don’t tell anybody! ?

Dang man that’s awesome! Good luck, getting a drivers permit is hard enough, a pilots license has got to be complicated ?

Oh yeah, if you happen to get a private license, feel free to swing by Michigan and then to Attu Island for, let’s say a fall migration for some Siberian Specialties ?

Yeah, or that! A really cool place, been wanting to go there for a while, I still need all the boreal specialties. And of course a healthy dose of winter finches.
