They roost in the valley right next to the town. Every morning Erlanger sunrise and every evening around sunset, the giant flock flies over. During the day, they disperse to all the different areas in the town. For example, a neighborhood walk in the middle of the day gets about 150ish crows. However, the giant counts that you’ll sometimes see on my checklists are all flyovers at sunrise and sunset. In fact, there’s more than 2000, it’s just that most of them are blocked by the hills. There’s probably closer to 4000, just how would I know? At different hotspot during the day in my area, you can get up to 200, still everywhere though.

Great-horned Owls start nesting about now so your chances are better than other times of the year to see them in day light hours. Right now look for blobs in trees that turn out to be stick nests (easier to see with no leaves on the trees this time of year). Using your binoculars look carefully for head of the female poking up out of the nest. Once the babies are hatched the parents may need to hunt during the day to keep the young ones fed so that increases your chances of seeing them also. Oh and those nests don't need to very big. It is amazing how little room they need.

neilpa
Triple lifer day doing a loop around my county. Had two targets and got a bonus third Golden Eagle - Unexpected county rarity and easily my fave of the day. Rough-legged Hawk Glaucous Gull - This bird was approaching nemesis status. Finally got one at a McDonald's parking lot, aka the McGull according to my girlfriend. Edited February 20, 2022 by neilpa

It's in a subdivision, so I'm not a huge fan of hanging around in a place like that for too long. I've only had 1 less than pleasant interaction with a cop while birding, but doesn't mean I want to keep having them. ?

I haven’t been birding too long so I don’t have much experience birding residential areas apart from my own neighborhood. Had the police wonder what me and some family members were doing while we were participating in a Frog and Toad survey at night once though, he was nice about it just curious as to what the heck we were doing ?
Colton V
After months of staring longingly at the gulls that hang around my high school, I finally managed to pick out my lifer Glaucous Gull yesterday. I don't take my birding gear to school so all I got was a horrible cell phone shot, sadly.
