dragon49
Almost certain I had spotted a few Swallow-tailed Kites earlier this year, but I had no photo evidence, and my views weren't the best, so I didn't take credit for it unitil now: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/459687511

Colton V
I stopped visiting this site for a few months because I got busy with school and life in general… Now that I’ve graduated high school and need something to look at during work breaks I’ll probably be back on this site more often (not like anyone really cares, haha). Since I’ve last posted on this topic (March) I’ve had 6 lifers! 268. Cassin’s Vireo (April 21) 269. Lewis’s Woodpecker (May 7) 270. Scissor-tailed Flycatcher (May 22) 271. Calliope Hummingbird (June 14) 272. Gray Catbird (June 15) 273. Ruffed Grouse (June 17)

How common are they in Orange County? I don’t think I have them for my county list (I’d have to check though). I know they’re are pretty common around north LA, but Orange County might be too low in elevation?

They’re fairly rare along the coast and in the lower elevation suburbs and scrub, but up in the Santa Ana mountains(not that high in elevation and is mostly mixed oak woodland with some scrub areas?) they can be regular. But in the coast they’re uncommon, as I said. Haven’t gone birding up in the mountains yet, because for most spots you need a permit or something. https://ebird.org/map/batpig1?neg=true&env.minX=&env.minY=&env.maxX=&env.maxY=&zh=false&gp=false&ev=Z&mr=1-12&bmo=1&emo=12&yr=cur

floraphile
Hubby & I have recently been experiencing the joys of COVID. Our isolation period was up yesterday and today I returned to the Land of the Living. The smallest effort is exhausting. BUT, this guy (or gal) has been hanging out in Mobile county, so I had to go. It was tough lifting those bins and camera, but so worth it.

dragon49
Least Terns have been showing up on checklists at this hotspot for weeks, but until this afternoon, they had escaped my view. At the end of the trip, I saw the three terns circling above. They did look noticeably smaller than Royal Terns which I found at a nearby lake, but I wasn't 100% certain of the ID until an experienced birder confirmed it. I HATE lifers without photo evidence, (none right now - the White-winged Dove was the last holdout) so I stuck around in the heat and on-and off rain, shooting in sports mode until the trio left the area. No great pictures, but I was able to predict enough flight patterns to get some recognizable photos. https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/466409721 https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/466409781 Edited July 10, 2022 by dragon49

I swear, it's like trying to photograph swallows! I'm about the contact Nikon support regarding sports mode AI that thinks it's smarter than I am. So, when I'm in sports mode and trying to take a burst that starts ahead of the predicted path bird in flight, it often refuses to take the burst, presumably because it doesn't see anything to focus on. That is a major pain!
