Lifers

Recommended Posts

I got 4 lifers today!  I'll start with the big story, which I need to preface by thanking @DLecy and @IKLland for telling me that I shouldn't miss the opportunity to a Mega-Rare bird, especially since one of the spotted locations was so close to me.

I joined the party and chased the Mega-Rare Red-legged Honeycreeper this morning.  One of the experienced birders in the field told me that Hurricane Ian blew these in from Cuba.  Funny story to the start of the day.  I was up until early this A.M. and was planning on sleeping late, and then showing up at the hotspot whenever I got around to it, but as birding is now in my blood, I was unable to sleep in.  I woke up at 6:00 A.M., not tired at all.  My timing was perfect, as I showed up at the park a few minutes before the gates to the parking lot were opened, and I joined a number of other birders in pursuit of the Mega-Rare bird.  It had the atmosphere of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, as we were all on the same mission.  It’s a good thing I showed up when I did, because had I showed up later without the crowd, there would been a close to a 0% chance of me spotting the bird.

Awesome! I'm super, super jealous of the Honeycreeper! I'm glad you saw it, that's definitely not a bird you would want to miss!

Bumping my thread for clarification.  @blackburnian correctly pointed out that the photos under the Northern Gannet observation were not Northern Gannets. I had a local expert look, and he thinks they are all Royal Terns.  I'm reasonably certain that I took the photos in question when somebody mentioned the Northern Gannets in the distance, but I was obviously focused on a different flock.  Since I carefully went through all of my photos from that checklist, and nothing can be Identified as a Northern Gannet, I went ahead and deleted the observation.

I wanted to share the update, as I take my lifers seriously.

I'll be back at the same pier this afternoon and am hoping to get at least one more lifer.  People have been spotting Green-winged Teals, which would be a lifer for me.

If you’re positive you saw the birds, why not count it? EBird wants you to report every bird you heard or saw. If you saw the birds and don’t report them, you’ll have to change it to an incomplete checklist. And I’m pretty sure you have a few bird on your life list without photos, so…?
