Many other county birders have been reporting this bird all winter, and I was getting sick and tired of seeing it in my needs list all day. 🙂 Now that I know Merlin gets this call right, I'm certain I've observed it at least once before. I'm fine taking lifers from sound IDs only, (although I much prefer visual IDs with photos) but I thought the previous high-pitched calls I heard were too marginal and too short to be conclusive evidence. I have a feeling my aged ears are having problems with high-frequency sounds, which is why I wasn't certain of the earlier IDs. Short-eared Owls and Northern Harriers circled me while Eastern Meadowlarks sang and Greater Prairie-Chickens (lifer!) displayed, all the while American Tree Sparrows flitted from bush to bush and Horned Larks called overhead.
