Florida/Texas road trip bird ID help #5

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

all right, now to Texas, I slept in Midland on the way to Carlsbad, NM - I20 Preserve was flooded so I went to Sibley Nature Center.

1) Clearly a wren, but is it House Wren, Bewick's Wren or Winter Wren?
Location: Sibley Nature Center, Midland, TX

Location: Sibley Nature Center, Midland, TX

Bewick’s for wren. All guesses are correct. Pass on scaups.

I agree with this.

Scaup are, perhaps, more readily differentiated when tucked in sleep like this than in any other posture. The peaked crown makes the ID straightforward.

I'm curious why you would consider Winter Wren given the long tail, long bill, and, particularly, the location.

Ah, I thought Midland was in the middle of Texas, horizontally, which would according to the book I use put it on the edge of winter range.
