riverpoet
Hi all, more Laguna Atascosa NWR and some South Padre, now filed 50% of the images, oh my. Now come the ducks, gulls, terns, shorebirds. 1) Almost filed this one under Olive Sparrow, but the bill says it's not a sparrow. Very plain lookingbird. Not many ideas here - Organge-crowned Warbler? Location: Laguna Atascosa NWR, road to Visitor Center and short trail around Visitor Center 2) Not good at terns, they all look the same to me! But at this location the options are Caspian, Forster's, Gull-billed, Royal and Sandwich. Black bill > Gull-billed, Forster's, Sandwich. Perhaps dark trailing edges on outer wing feathers say Gull-billed? Location: Laguna Atascosa NWR, Osprey Overlook 3) Ever harder one ... I guess bill is not gull-like, so it leaves Caspian, Forster's, Royal and Sandwich. Black bill > Gull-billed, Forster's, Sandwich. Not sure about blll color, maybe it seems bicolored? Location: South Padre Island, beach at the dunes 4) Yeah I love female ducks... not! Female Canvasback? Location: Laguna Atascosa NWR, Osprey Overlook 5) Just to confirm - Willet? Location: South Padre Island, beach at the dunes Thanks, Peter

darknight
2 looks to be a Gull-billed and 3 a Forster's, with the "mask" around the eyes and thinner bill. 1
blackburnian
2 and 3 are Forster’s Terns.
Phalarope713
Why isn't 2 a Gull-billed? The bill looks very hefty for a Forster's from this angle. Not to question your ID, but I'm just interested in tips to distinguish the two. Edited February 21, 2020 by Phalarope713

blackburnian
Any other shots of 2? Still looks like typical Forster’s to me...

At that location, looks like Forster's is twice as probable as Gull-billed (but probably not enough data to take it for granted).
darknight
The very shorter, less pointed tail and heavier bill of #2 point to Gull-billed over Forster's.
