JackieL
I always have trouble with these, I'm thinking Eastern Phoebe but would like to have some other opinions. Photos taken May 2019 on Long Island, NY. Thank you in advance for all help!
The Bird Nuts
It's not an Eastern Phoebe because it has an orange lower mandible. I'm not sure which flycatcher it is, though, so let's see what others have to say.
insanityslave
i cant say what it is, but i dont think its an eastern phoebe. firstly phoebe's bills are black, and this one looks yellow/orange. secondly, while its 'possible,' they shouldnt be that far north this time of year. Jefferson Shank
Here, I cropped it in a bit. I would say it is an Eastern Phoebe with the sun glaring off it's beak.
The Bird Nuts
Definitely not an Eastern Phoebe - it has distinct wingbars. It also appears to be a greenish-gray color.
Jefferson Shank
It is an Eastern Wood-Pewee.
Kevin
It is absolutely, definitely, not an Eastern Phoebe!

Jefferson Shank
It is an Eastern Wood-Pewee. That was my impression, but I couldn't tell if it had an eyering or not. Brightened version. Do you see the slight eye ring now? Notched tail, beak color, distinct wing-bars, etc. show that it is an Eastern Wood-Pewee.

Jefferson Shank
So... are we concluding on Eastern Wood Pewee? I am.
hbvol50
Isn't the primary projection a bit short for a Pewee?
Phalarope713
Another for Eastern Wood-Pewee.
Tony Leukering
The wings Seem too short for any migratory Contopus. Given the date and the relatively long wings for an empie, I'd guess Alder Fly, though the available photo does not, I think, allow for definitive ID.

blackburnian
Imo, not pewee. Willow/Alder seems a good bet.

These 2 are not always that easy to separate without hearing song. Yes there are ways, but even in the hand they sometimes prove difficult with the overlap.
