Harlans Hawk?

Recommended Posts

PS no one else has stepped in to confirm but I'm pretty sure this is a dark morph Rough-legged Hawk. The reason I think it is Rough-legged not Red-tailed is the shape - notice how lanky it is, long-winged and long-tailed, with less secondary bulge than expected in Red-tail. Also notice how it is holding its wings - in a bit of a dihedral, wing slightly bent at "wrists". Plumage is pretty typical for dark morph Rough-leg, the tail, the wings, the black-and-white coloration without warm rusty or chocolatey tones, the little bit of a white forehead. Harlan's Red-tailĀ could definitely match this quite closely in plumage, but nothing else - not dark morph Red-tail or dark morph Ferrug, there would be more warmth to the coloration and the tail would be unusual.
