bpresby
Here are a few from the front yard. This morning in Southern California. 1. A sparrow I think. Lots of House Finches, House Sparrows, Song Sparrows, White-Crowned Sparrows, and Chipping Sparrows. I thought chipping sparrow, but doesn't match my ID book. Possibly a female of the ones I listed above. 2. Not a great shot, but I think a Western Blue Bird on the left and House Finch on the right Thanks for the help. Jefferson Shank
female Purple Finch - note the contrasty head pattern with pale eyebrow and darker cheek, and the well-defined streak on side. Western Bluebird (left); male House Finch (right)
The Bird Nuts
#1 is actually a House finch. The face pattern isn't nearly bold enough for a Purple and the culmen (upper ridge of the beak) is much too curved.
