The angle you are looking at it causing the white collar to be exaggerated and possibly flared out as a defensive gesture. Also if you zoom in on the head you can see some green iridescence that the Ring-necked has and not the Reeve's. I don't know a lot about pheasants but I've been looking at a lot of pictures since this conversation and.... the bird in the pic seems to have light or white colors markings on the front side. Ring-necked Pheasant for me The white collar in a RINP is only on the neck, nowhere near the face. I can see the entire head, also on top, covered in white with a black mask over top. Pheasants simply dont have this shape either (speaking from experience). This bird looks more compact and quail-like. The green iridescent appearance is actually some sort of reflection I think, you can see the same green hue on the tree branches. millipede Posted March 25, 2020 Author Share Posted March 25, 2020 Well so far, I still think Reeves's pheasant is the best match. My mom sent me some more photos but it looks like most of them were just different croppings of the same photo... then there's one other one. The pattern on the body, tail, face... the color... so much about it just says Reeves's to me. But here's the other picture that shows a different angle. As far as native birds, it was the only one where that head would sort of make sense. And that first picture made distinguishing things complicated.
